Metro Mondego and the City of Coimbra announce that, starting tomorrow, August 7th, Praça da República will enter a new phase of urban transformation with the progress of construction on the urban section of the Metrobus between Avenida Aeminium and the Pediatric Hospital, promoted by Infraestruturas de Portugal.
This phase aims to renovate the underground infrastructure of Águas de Coimbra and involves the temporary reorganization of traffic.
The attached image shows the layout of alternative road circuits during the intervention.
Thus, the intervention will take place between the intersection of Rua Padre António Vieira, Avenida Sá da Bandeira, and Rua Lourenço de Almeida Azevedo, with minor interventions on Rua Oliveira Matos and Rua Almeida Garrett, which will be closed to road access to Praça da República.
Traffic on Avenida Sá da Bandeira will be restored to a single-lane ascending lane, with parking spaces next to the building, and two-way traffic will be available on Alexandre Herculano Street.
Traffic coming from Praça da República and Rua Tenente Valadim toward Rua Padre António Vieira will have to temporarily descend Avenida Sá da Bandeira, bypass the roundabout at the end of the avenue, and return via the ascending lane.
Local access will also be guaranteed via the following streets:
- Rua Oliveira Matos: access to garages will be guaranteed via Rua Venâncio Rodrigues;
- Rua Almeida Garrett: local access will be guaranteed for vehicle entry and exit.
The current SMTUC bus stop next to the Gil Vicente Academic Theater will be relocated to Avenida Sá da Bandeira, immediately before the intersection with Rua Padre António Vieira.
During the entire closure period, pedestrian traffic will be ensured, as will emergency vehicle access.
The work to be carried out during this intervention is as follows:
- Interventions on Águas de Coimbra's infrastructure, specifically the water supply, wastewater drainage, and stormwater drainage networks;
- Public lighting infrastructure;
- SLAT (Automatic Traffic Lighting System).
Metro Mondego, Águas de Coimbra, and the Municipality ask for the public's understanding regarding the temporary constraints this phase may cause, reaffirming that these works are contributing to the modernization and functionality of the city. To facilitate adaptation to this new phase of work and minimize potential impacts on traffic, we recommend using navigation apps like Waze or Google Maps. These platforms already include updated information on temporary changes, allowing drivers to choose the most appropriate routes in real time.
