On Friday, August 29, Metro Mondego will begin the Preliminary Operation of the Mondego Mobility System (SMM) on the urban section between Portagem Station and Vale das Flores Station, in Coimbra.

The inaugural trips are scheduled to start at 10:00 a.m. and will run until 6:00 p.m. Beginning Saturday, August 30, and continuing until the full commercial service is launched between Serpins and Portagem, regular operations between these two urban stations will take place daily from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., including weekends. As with the demonstration held last weekend, this preliminary operation will be free of charge and open to all interested passengers.

This phase plays a crucial role in optimizing the commercial operation between Coimbra and Serpins, which is scheduled for the last quarter of 2025. It will allow for regular travel on this urban section while enabling large-scale testing of vehicles, infrastructure, technical systems, operational management, and the passenger experience. The goal is to ensure the system’s full and seamless operation and to address any potential issues before commercial launch.

On this first day of the preliminary operation, the Minister of Infrastructure and Housing is expected to be present and will take part in a symbolic journey, marking another decisive step toward the realization of this sustainable mobility project—one that is vital for both the city and the region.

The launch of the preliminary operation is a clear sign that the Mondego Mobility System is moving closer to serving the public, taking a firm step toward a more sustainable, modern, and inclusive mobility solution.
