Metro Mondego to switch to an intermodal-only fare structure starting October 1st
Starting October 1, 2026, Metro Mondego will exclusively offer the MOVE-C intermodal fare system, allowing travel across multiple operators in the Coimbra region with a single ticket.
With this decision, Metro Mondego is discontinuing single-operator fares, reinforcing its commitment to a truly transformative project for the Coimbra region: intermodality and fare simplification.
There is now a single fare system that is easier to understand and use. Passengers traveling on the Metrobus can also travel on SMTUC, SIT Metropolitano, and CP services at no extra cost.
It is important to note that all subsidized passes remain available: Circula PT (tiers A and B), the Free Youth Pass, and the Veteran Pass.
What happens starting October 1
• All Metro Mondego tickets will be intermodal.
• Monthly passes — you can renew your MOVE-C pass as usual at the MAVT machines located at all Metrobus stations.
• MOVE-C occasional tickets can be purchased and topped up at all Metro Mondego MAVT machines.
• Discounts and free travel options remain available to passengers upon proof of eligibility — Circula PT (tiers A and B), Free Youth Pass, and Veteran Pass.
• Already have a MOVE-C card? You don’t need to do anything; simply top it up whenever necessary.
Single-operator tickets purchased by September 30, 2026, remain valid until their respective expiration dates. You will not lose trips you have already paid for.
State-funded transport passes
The end of the single-mode fare structure does not eliminate support for those who benefit from it.
"Circula PT" is a fare scheme in Portugal offering 50% or 25% discounts on monthly public transport passes for citizens with low incomes or special needs.
Young people up to the age of 23 can continue to travel for free across the entire Metro Mondego network—spanning three municipalities—by simply obtaining the necessary transport pass. This discount also extends to young people up to age 24 who are enrolled in integrated study programs.
Children up to 3 years of age travel for free.
Further information on state-funded passes is available on the Metro Mondego website, via our customer support line, or on the website of AGIT (Agency for the Management of the Coimbra Region Intermodal System).
Advantages of intermodality
One pass for the entire journey. You no longer need to buy one ticket for the Metrobus and another for SMTUC, SIT Metropolitano, or CP. A single top-up gets you to your destination.
Greater network access for the same price. The MOVE-C pass is valid across multiple transport operators. For those who previously used only the Metrobus, this means access to a wider network at no extra cost.
Less wasted time. With no queues to buy a second ticket and no uncertainty about which one to purchase, transfers are no longer a hassle.
A growing system. The intermodal fare structure will expand to include operators beyond Metro Mondego and SMTUC—specifically CP (Comboios de Portugal) and the CIM Coimbra Region’s SIT Metropolitano. Multiple operators, one single fare system.
