Metrobus Works: Olímpio Nicolau Rui Fernandes Street
Metro Mondego and the Coimbra City Council inform that, starting January 13th, a new phase of the Metrobus works will begin on Rua Olímpio Nicolau Rui Fernandes, on the Hospital Line section, promoted by Infraestruturas de Portugal.
This phase corresponds to the final works of the intervention, including paving the road, building sidewalks, drainage, and installing the dedicated Metrobus lane. The works are expected to last several months.
The image shows the traffic flow scheme in the Rua Olímpio Nicolau Rui Fernandes area during the intervention.
During this period, car traffic will be restricted. Traffic will alternate in both directions on a single lane, regulated by construction traffic lights. Significant delays are expected, so motorists are advised to avoid this street whenever possible and use alternative routes.
Those wishing to access the city center from the military maintenance area, in addition to the alternative routes, will also have the option of using Rua da Manutenção Militar, Rua de Montarroio, and Rua Pedro Rocha. In the opposite direction, towards Praça da República, the use of Rua de Aveiro, Conchada, Rua de Saragoça, and Avenida Sá da Bandeira is recommended.
Despite the restrictions, access to the D. Pedro V Municipal Market is permanently guaranteed, including parking, loading and unloading areas, and access necessary for the normal operation of the market. Access to the PSP police station and other essential services located in the area is also guaranteed.
Pedestrian circulation will be ensured, with safe and properly signposted routes and alternative pedestrian crossings whenever necessary.
During the restrictions, the SMTUC bus stops located next to Jardim da Manga in both directions will be temporarily moved to Rua da Sofia. The taxi rank located next to the PSP (Public Security Police) will be moved to Rua Pedro Olaio, next to the Citizen's Shop.
Considering the expected disruptions, prior planning of journeys and the use of navigation applications such as Waze and Google Maps are recommended, where the restrictions are integrated and updated, allowing the selection of the most appropriate route at any given time.
The Coimbra City Council and Metro Mondego thank all residents for their understanding regarding the temporary inconveniences caused, necessary for the completion of a key infrastructure for the city's mobility.
